Look What I Can Do!

Today is the day!  The day I get to walk around at home without my aircast!  Woot, woot!

But first I had to clean my shoes yesterday.  They were a mess!

And Asics didn’t come through with a new pair for me.  Don’t know why.  Don’t they know what a loyal customer I am? Guess not.  Not yet anyway.

So I was stuck cleaning them myself.  Great.  First step was to take the inserts out.

I don’t think I have ever taken the inserts out of my running shoes.

And into the kitchen sink my shoes went.  I used hot, but not hot enough to burn me, water and Dawn dish soap.  My cleaning hand tool of choice?

My toothbrush!  No, not my current toothbrush.  I always save my old toothbrush when I get a new one to use for cleaning purposes.  They are perfect for scrubbing small areas, like around the base of a faucet.

I let the shoes float soak for maybe five minutes to loosen the dirt.  Then I set to scrubbing.  Oh what fun it is to clean!  Said no one ever.

And look how great they cleaned up!

I then set them up in front of a fan on high to dry.  Today they were ready to go.  And so was I!

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous.  I was.  Very.  What if my ankle and foot weren’t strong enough to support me?  The aircast had been doing that forever.  What if there was pain?  I was told if it is painful or I get worn out, to put the aircast back on.  Baby steps so I don’t re-injure myself.  And what if the running shoe rubs against the metal in my ankle?  That will mean more surgery to remove it.  I tried not to let the negeative thoughts take away from the joy of the moment.

But first I need to dress the part.  And that included picking out a sock!

wild socks

How fun are they?  I have been wearing these fun socks in my aircast for the past week since I don’t have to wrap my foot in the ace bandage anymore.

I also wanted to dress my shoes up a bit.  Because, today really is a coming out party for my foot.

And then the shoe went on.  It felt… weird.

And then I stood up.  All felt okay.  No pain.  And then I took a step.  My first cast-free step in 10.5 weeks!

I was walking!!  Cast-free and pain-free!  My foot felt so light!  I am still limping a bit, but I think that is more out of habit.  I feel a bit like a toddler walking, but I’m okay with that.  I also went up and down the stairs.  I definitely held tight to the railing.  And I didn’t fall!

Walking today, but hopefully (fingers crossed!) running in two more weeks!!

What was the best part of your week?

What are you looking forward to this weekend?
